Crafty Closet Collective: Who We Are

Updated: Jan 27

Crafty Closet Collective is dedicated to providing handmade wardrobe, beauty, and self care essentials to survivors of domestic abuse and trauma. By harnessing the therapeutic power of creativity, we aim to foster healing, build community, and provide resources to those in need. Our mission extends beyond crafting for fun; it promotes the journey of recovery and healing for survivors through support, empowerment, and connection.

Our Vision: Supporting Survivors Through Crafting

At Crafty Closet Collective, we believe in the healing power of handmade goods. Crafting can be a healing experience for both survivors of trauma and allies, offering a means to express feelings, share stories, and find solace. We envision a world where every survivor has access to safe spaces and resources that promote healing, love, and connection.

Our goals are clear and driven by an unwavering commitment to make a difference. By 2028, we aspire to transition into a nonprofit organization, allowing us to gain further resources, support, and legitimacy in our mission. This status will enable us to reach more survivors, allowing us to expand our program offerings.

Building a Community of Volunteers

Volunteers are the lifeline of Crafty Closet Collective. The heart of our initiative lies in the hands of compassionate individuals who share our vision for helping domestic violence and trauma survivors. We invite volunteers from all walks of life, whether you are a seasoned crafter or a novice to help us achieve our goals.

Getting Involved

Volunteering with us can take many forms. You can assist in crafting, organizing events, or spreading the word. Each volunteer plays a vital role in fostering a sense of love and support for survivors. Here are some specific ways you can get involved:

  1. Crafting: Help facilitate the creation of BeautyBags - our signature handmade totebags filled with practical beauty and self care essentials. More information on how what specifically goes in BeautyBags and how to make one can be found here.

We also accept handmade garments and accessories as apart of our Collective Goods initiative. These handmade items are for donation along with BeautyBags and are provided to participating shelters, hospitals, and safe spaces. For more information and inspiration on Collective Goods, you can learn more here.

  2. Donation Drives: Participate in organizing drives for crafting materials. Donations of fabrics, yarn, and other supplies not only enable our volunteers to create beautiful items, but also serve as tangible reminders to survivors that they are cared for.

  3. Awareness Campaigns: Join us in raising awareness about abuse and the impact of crafting for a cause. Share information on your social media, talk with your friends, or engage with local businesses to support our initiatives.

Partnering with Local Shelters

To enhance our reach and effectiveness, we are committed to partnering with local shelters, hospitals, and safe spaces. These collaborations allow us to provide not just our collection of BeautyBags and Collective Goods, but also a comprehensive support system for survivors. Shelters often offer safe refuges, and together, we can build a network of resources tailored to those who need them most.

Benefits of Partnerships

  1. Resource Sharing: By working with shelters interested in our initiative, we can create meaningful impact tailored to the needs of those we serve as we provide curated BeautyBags with desired items.

  2. Increased Awareness: Collaborating with shelters enhances our visibility in the community. Together, we can spread awareness of both domestic violence, the impact of trauma, and the healing potential of crafting.

Our Goals for the Future

As we aim for our nonprofit status by 2028, we have established several main goals:

Expand Number of BeautyBags and Collective Goods Provided

We intend to broaden the scope of our crafting to include a greater number of BeautyBags and wider variety of Collective Goods provided to survivors. Currently, we have a goal of providing 50 bags every 6 months, along with an assortment of Collective Goods. Our expansion will allow us to cater to more people, maximizing benefits for survivors.

Increase Volunteer Participation

We appreciate the support of the dedicated individuals apart of our volunteer team. As our community grows, so too does our ability to create more impactful experiences for survivors.

Educate and Inform about our Initiative

We strive to inform the public of our initiative, services, and mission, as we work towards achieving 501(c)3 status.

Crafty Closet Collective is committed to making every handmade item meaningful and beneficial for participants. Each handmade item is a step toward a brighter future – one where survivors find empowerment through comfort, connection, and support.
